Wangari Maathai

Wangari Gardens is named after Professor and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Wangari Maathai.  This incredible Kenyan woman founded the Greenbelt Movement which spread all over East Africa and worldwide.  She was an environmentalist and social justice peace activist who empowered mainly women to plant more than 47 million trees.  She tirelessly worked to combine environmental, economic, and social development.

Professor Maathai passed away in September of 2011.

Neither Wangari Gardens nor Friends of Wangari Gardens, Inc. are officially connected or endorsed by the family of Wangari Maathai or her organization, the Greenbelt Movement.  We use her name because we are inspired by the work that she did, and wish to pass her message on to others.
